Abstract of Daniel L. Geiger's papers

Two types of anchoring rootlets on stolons of Bowerbankia imbricata (Adams, 1798) (Bryozoa: Ctenostomata) are discussed. Lateral anchoring rootlets form near the growing tip of the stolon carrying zooids, but become lateral structures as the stolon grows. These anchoring rootlets may be resorbed or additional ones may be formed. Terminal anchoring rootlets form on short stolons, which are devoid of zooids and do not grow further. Once the tenninal anchoring rootlets have been produced, they are not resorbed nor are new rootlets formed. In one case, anchoring rootlets formed as outgrowths of an autozooidal bud, confirming that zooidal types other than kenozooids are capable to produce anchoring structures. The relation of these two types of anchoring rootlets to other outgrowths is discussed.
